trauma faq

If you’re living with the effects of trauma, it can feel like your body and mind are stuck in a constant state of alert, even when you know you’re safe.

You might find yourself anxious, overwhelmed, easily triggered, or disconnected from yourself and unsure how to move forward.

I offer trauma therapy in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, with both in-person sessions near Huddersfield and online therapy across the UK.

What is trauma?

Trauma isn’t just about what happened to you, it’s about how your nervous system has responded to experiences that felt overwhelming, unsafe, or too much to process at the time.

This can include:

  • Single events such as accidents, medical experiences, or losses

  • Ongoing stress or difficult environments

  • Childhood experiences where emotional needs weren’t consistently met

  • Situations where you felt unsafe, helpless, or unsupported

Trauma can show up in many ways, often long after the original experience.

How trauma can affect you

You might notice;

  • Anxiety or panic that feels hard to control

  • Flashbacks, intrusive memories, or nightmares

  • Feeling constantly on edge or easily triggered

  • Emotional numbness or disconnection

  • Dissociation (feeling detached from yourself or reality)

  • Physical symptoms such as tension, fatigue, or unexplained discomfort

These are not signs of weakness, they are signs that your nervous system has been trying to protect you.

How I work with trauma

I am a trauma therapist specialising in anxiety, panic, and nervous system regulation.

My approach is integrative and trauma-informed, combining talking therapy with somatic (body-based) techniques.

This includes gentle practices such as;

  • Grounding

  • Breathwork

  • Visualisation

  • Nervous system regulation

The aim is to help you feel safer in your body so that deeper emotional processing can happen in a supported and manageable way.

We work at your pace, without pressure to revisit anything before you feel ready.

What trauma therapy can help with

Trauma therapy can support you to:

  • Feel calmer and more regulated in your day-to-day life

  • Reduce the intensity of anxiety, panic, or overwhelm

  • Understand and work with your triggers

  • Process past experiences that may still be affecting you

  • Feel more connected to yourself and your emotions

  • Build a greater sense of safety, stability, and self-trust

Who I work with

I often work with people who are used to keeping going, holding things together, and supporting others, even when it’s at the expense of their own wellbeing.

Over time, this can lead to feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or disconnected from yourself.

These patterns often develop for good reasons, but they can keep your nervous system in a prolonged state of stress.

About sessions

I offer;

  • In-person trauma therapy in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire (near Huddersfield)

  • Online trauma therapy for clients across the UK

Sessions provide a calm, confidential space where you can begin to explore what’s been happening at a pace that feels safe and manageable.

My background

Before becoming a therapist, I worked as an ICU nurse within the NHS, where I saw first-hand the emotional impact of trauma on patients, families, and staff.

Alongside this, I carried out research into psychological recovery after critical illness, and contributed to developing and delivering a counselling service for patients and families, as well as supporting wellbeing initiatives within ICU settings.

I completed a Master’s degree in Person-Centred and Psychodynamic Counselling at the University of Edinburgh while working in the NHS staff counselling service, and also delivered teaching and workshops for NHS staff and nursing students.
